Any good fantasy owner looks at and analyzes his team on a week-by-week basis. What happens the week before can, and most often will, dramatically affect what happens the following week. So, on the eve of Week 2, don’t forget what happened last Sunday, and then apply that information to your lineups.
Injuries to Tom Brady and Marques Colston certainly will have an impact on their respective teams. Also, as we take a look ahead to Week 2, while we expect big things from Julius Jones and Jerricho Cotchery, we can’t say the same about Donovan McNabb.
WEEK 1 REWIND
Tom Brady Out For Year
In case you’ve been under a rock for the last week, you know that Tom Brady is out for the year with a torn ACL and MCL.
Fantasy Spin: Every player on the Patriots offense, even studs Randy Moss and Wes Welker, take a big hit in value. But it is time to add Matt Cassel, since he may have more weapons at his disposal than any other QB in the league.
Burleson Clouds Seahawks WR Corps
The oft-injured Burleson, who was supposed to be Seattle’s No. 1 option with Bobby Engram and Deion Branch already out, tore a knee ligament in Week 1 and will miss the remainder of the year.
Fantasy Spin: Matt Hasselbeck was already struggling for targets and now it’s anyone’s guess who steps up as the No. 1 option in Seattle (Logan Payne and Courtney Taylor are the best candidates). Pay attention to who Hasselbeck targets, and then look to add them. Branch should also be a major player in this offense once he returns.
Vince Young Sidelined
There is no more disturbing story in the NFL than Vince Young. Troubling reports surfaced from his psychiatrist and he sprained his MCL in his left knee and will miss 2-4 weeks.
Fantasy Spin: It goes without saying that Young’s value plummets after this fiasco. In fact, he should not be on any fantasy rosters. Kerry Collins, who may even be better suited for the Titans offense, steps in and could develop into a reliable backup.
Marques Colston To Miss Time
After injuring his thumb in the first week, WR Marques Colston will miss four-to-six weeks after undergoing thumb surgery.
Fantasy Spin: Colston got a lot of looks from Brees, but in this potent offense many receivers can be successful. David Patten, Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem may all get the chance to be the main guy in New Orleans, with Patten being the most likely to step up.
Ahman Green’s Injury Opens Door For Slaton
Houston’s top back (when healthy) sprained his ankle and is unlikely to play on Sunday. Green has a history of injury problems and has been struggling to stay on the field the past few seasons.
Fantasy Spin: Rookie Steve Slaton, who had 43 yards on 13 carries in Week 1, will likely get the start and will try to take away the starting job from the gimpy Green. Chris Taylor will also factor in with some carries.
BOLD PREDICTIONS
Seahawks RB Julius Jones will easily have his first 100-yard game since 2006
One week ago Jones was splitting carries in a balanced offense. Now, he is going to be called upon to be a workhouse back. Injuries to WR Nate Burleson and RB Maurice Morris make him Seattle’s best weapon, and he should thrive against the 49ers.
Eagles QB McNabb will throw for less than 200 yards versus Dallas
After throwing for 361 yards in Week 1, Dallas will shut down McNabb on Monday night. His top wideouts are banged up and the Dallas defense was stingy, holding Cleveland to only 114 yards in the air last week.
Packers RB Ryan Grant will rush for at least 125 yards and a TD versus Detroit
Detroit got torched by Michael Turner in Week 1, and even though Grant is having some hamstring problems, he should still run all over the Lions. He had 92 yards last week and had 158 yards and two scored in two games versus Detroit last year.
Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery will have over 125 yards receiving and a TD versus New England
Cotchery and Brett Favre have instantly formed a connection and they will find each other once again against the Pats. Cotchery had 80 yards and a TD in Favre’s Jets debut, and New England yielded more than 200 yards in the air against a very suspect Kansas City passing offense last week.
The best running back on the Raiders (this year) is Justin Fargas
Darren McFadden gets all the hype. Michael Bush was a former first-round pick. But Justin Fargas will have the best season of any Raider running back. He had 97 yards in Week 1, and with McFadden hampered by a shoulder injury, he should solidify himself as the feature back.
