Week 2 Free Agent Profiles: TE, D/ST, K

Posted by Mike Bertha

After a season-opening week of surprises and injuries, fantasy owners should be hitting waiver wires hard this week in an effort to add depth outside of the skill positions. This can be easily accomplished by making a few moves to pick up a tight end, defense or kicker, either to play a backup role or replace a struggling (or injured) starter.

Here are a couple of contributors that likely slipped through the cracks on draft day. They would make great additions to your bench and could add some depth to your squad for when the bye weeks start in Week 4. But, take heed by noting the “What to Watch For” line as it could provide some possible downside to these mid-week additions.

TIGHT ENDS
Anthony Fasano, Miami Dolphins
Status:
Making a connection with new QB Chad Pennington
Key Stats: Had 8 receptions for 84 yards and TD in Week 1
What to Watch For: Tough defensive matchups - he’s pitted against New England, San Diego, Baltimore, Buffalo, and Denver in the next 8 weeks
Other Notes: He’s a Parcells system guy who made a name for himself in Dallas’ two-TE system alongside pro-bowler Jason Witten

Dante Rosario, Carolina Panthers
Status:
Coming off big Week 1 performance that included a spectacular game-winning TD catch as time expired
Key Stats: 7 receptions, 96 yards, 1 TD vs. San Diego
What to Watch For: Production may slip when wide-out Steve Smith returns for Week 3
Other Notes: Is nursing a sprained foot, but looks to be OK to play against the Bears in Week 2 … had only six receptions in his 2007 rookie campaign, but two of them went for scores.

L.J. Smith, Philadelphia Eagles
Status:
Showing fine-tuned skills after dropping weight in the offseason
Key Stats: 5 receptions, 39 yards, 1 TD in Week 1
What to Watch For: Production to normalize as team’s depleted receiving corps gets healthy
Other Notes: Missed some starts with a sports hernia in ‘07, so his performance will likely be closer to his 2006 numbers if he stays healthy.

Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans
Status:
Coming off his first career 100-yard game
Key Stats: 6 receptions, 105 yards in win over the Jags
What to Watch For: How backup Kerry Collins uses him as he fills in for injured Vince Young (sprained knee)
Other Notes: His 44-yard catch last week was a career long.

Randy McMichael, TE, St. Louis Rams
Status:
Coming off best single-game yardage total since October ‘06
Key Stats: 5 receptions, 77 yards
What to Watch For: If the St. Louis offense works out its woes before hosting the Giants next week
Other Notes: As he enters into his seventh season as an NFL tight end, McMichael has still only missed one start and that was last season.

DEFENSES
Buffalo Bills D/ST
Status:
Flashing big-time skills on the defensive side and in the return game
Key Stats: 10 points against, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, 5 sacks, 2 TDs
What to Watch For: A cupcake schedule until their bye in Week 6, but things get tougher down the stretch
Other Notes: More than one-fourth of Roscoe Parrish’s career punt returns have gone for more than 20 yards.

Tennessee Titans D/ST
Status:
Matching up against an unorganized and underacheiving Cincinnati Bengals squad this week
Key Stats: 10 points against, 6 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery
What to Watch For: Better, more efficient offensive performances against them than what the Jaguars showed in Week 1
Other Notes: Held the Jags and their two-back system to only 33 yards rushing … have an emerging secondary and are fueled by dominant DT Albert Haynesworth.

Kansas City Chiefs D/ST
Status:
Held Brady-less Pats to 17 points in Week 1
Key Stats: 17 points against, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries
What to Watch For: Questions marks after Week 2, but Sunday’s matchup against Oakland is like 10 points on a silver platter
Other Notes: After losing 2007 NFL sack leader Jared Allen in a trade to the Vikings, less pressure on QBs will put more strain on the secondary.

KICKERS
Matt Prater, Denver Broncos
Status:
Getting situated in first opportunity as Denver’s place kicker
Key Stats: 2-for-2 FGs (26, 43), 5 extra points
What to Watch For: If Denver’s offensive potency is a good or bad thing for him
Other Notes: Career long field goal is 45 yards … didn’t attempt a kick in ‘07.

David Akers, Philadelphia Eagles
Status:
Seasoned vet who will likely see plenty of attempts at 40+ yards
Key Stats: 1-for-1 FGs (23), 5 extra points
What to Watch For: Decreasing accuracy, but opportunities to cash in from short distance
Other Notes: Hit 36 extra points last year, a number that figures to increase with Philly’s offense seemingly back on track.
