Week 2 Injury Updates

Posted by Mike Bertha

After Week 1 was complete, many NFL teams saw big-name guys go down. Some are gone for the season, altering the 2008 landscape permanently. Others are harboring smaller bumps and bruises affecting their status for only a week or two.

Below are the 10 injuries to guys not named Brady or Colston that will have the greatest impact on the fantasy world in Week 2. Obviously a lost season from the NFL’s poster boy and 4-6 weeks without Drew Brees’ No. 1 wideout have clear and lasting impacts. However, there are quite a few more that can affect fantasy owners’ decision-making for Week 2.

Willis McGahee, RB, BAL - After a gametime scratch from the Ravens’ 2008 debut put many fantasy owners in a world of hurt, it appears the former Miami Hurrican is back on track to start. He’s listed as probable on the Ravens injury report this week, but word from the coaching staff is that he should start and get the number of touches he’s used to seeing.

Dallas Clark, TE, IND - Clark was limited in practice Friday after missing Wednesday and Thursday with a knee injury. His status for Sunday’s game at Minnesota is questionable, but with an early bye week (Week 4) Clark will likely see very limited action, if any, in this week’s game. Next week vs. the Jags may be a stretch, too.

Ryan Grant, RB, GB - As the Packers head to the Motor City, their starting running back is nursing a sore hamstring. The Lions’ defense is a joke, and Green Bay should run away with this one early. Grant will surely play, but look for his second-half production to slip once the Packers have their division rivals in the in rear-view mirror.

Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Line - The Jags O-line is hurting … badly. Guard Vince Manuwai and OT/G Maurice Williams are both on injured reserve. Guard Uche Nwaneri also left for a portion of last week’s game against the Titans. This means that in Week 2 the Jags will start a rag-tag, militia-esque squad at O-line comprised of practice squad call-ups and guys playing out of position. Running backs MJD and Fred Taylor are likely to suffer, and on the flipside, the Buffalo Bills defense could be in for a second big week.

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, SD - Tomlinson practiced on Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday with a sore right big toe. He’s officially listed as questionable, but it is difficult to envision L.T. sitting out Week 2 at Denver. After a rough Week 1 loss to the Panthers, and with the image of Tomlinson riding the pine in last year’s AFC championship game still fresh in everyone’s mind, you can expect this Bolt to play and play well.

Reggie Brown, WR, PHI - With the Birds’ preseason No. 1 receiver Kevin Curtis out with a sports hernia, Brown and his injured hamstring become much more relevant. Brown sat out last week’s matchup against the struggling Rams and is listed as questionable for this week’s Monday night bout against Dallas. Even if he does play, Brown will yield touches to rookie DeSean Jackson, tight end L.J. Smith, and Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook.

Maurice Morris, RB, SEA - Morris is officially sitting out (knee) Week 2 vs. San Francisco.  With injuries plaguing the Seahawks at pretty much every skill position, Julius Jones and a banged-up Matt Hasselbeck will have to shoulder ALL of the offensive load. But, how hard could that be when you’re at home against the ‘Niners, right?

Brodie Croyle, QB, KC - The Chiefs’ Week 1 starter is definitely out for Week 2, meaning veteran Damon Huard will get the start against the Raiders. It will be interesting to see if backup Huard and second year wideout Dwayne Bowe can work together effectively to take advantage of an Oakland defense that didn’t show up in Week 1 against Denver.

Jeff Garcia, QB, TB - Garcia (ankle) saw limited action in practice on Friday and will not start this weekend. This means that Brian Griese will take the reins and try to engineer a win for Tampa Bay as they host an Atlanta Falcons team that looked good in Week 1. Coach Jon Gruden has gone on record saying that he still has confidence in Garcia, and he alluded to the fact that Griese could just be a one-week solution.

Ahman Green, RB, HOU - A report on the Texans’ official Web site is reporting that rookie Steve Slaton will start at running back in Week 2 while Green will likely sit out with an injured foot. But, don’t expect big things out of Slaton, Darius Walker, or anyone else in the Texans’ unproven backfield against a tough Ravens defense.
