Week 3 Position Rankings: Tight Ends

Posted by Mike Bertha

As the NFL and the collective fantasy world gear up for Week 3 action, questions come to mind. Are two of the top seven statistical tight ends really Miami Dolphins? Did the Oakland Raiders really win by 15 points last week? Is Gus Frerotte the answer to the Vikings’ troubles? Will the Rams hold a team to under 35 points even once this season?

The answers (yes, sadly yes, apparently, and don’t hold your breath) may make life in the fantasy world a little more complicated than usual.

Tight end, in its own right, is a murky position, one where several new options have emerged in the early part of the season. But, Week 3’s tight end position rankings will prove to be less evasive and more constant than some of fantasy’s other nerve-racking issues. By playing the matchups and being wary of quarterback woes, an owner can set himself up for success at an often-forgotten spot in his lineup.

Rk Player, Team Opp Notes
1. Tony Scheffler, DEN NO Best TE through 2 weeks; faces lackluster Saints D
2. Jason Witten, DAL PHI Had 7 catches, 100+ yards vs. Eagles D on MNF
3. Antonio Gates, SD @DEN Causes problems for any defense, especially Jets
4. John Carlson, SEA STL One of SEA’s few viable options; facing Rams a bonus
5. Chris Cooley, WAS ARI Week 3 vs. Cards a good time to start scoring points
6. Kellen Winslow, CLE @BAL Tough matchup, but only CLE receiver carrying his weight
7. Jeremy Shockey, NO @DEN Shutdown corners should have Brees’ eyes on him all day
8. Tony Gonzalez, KC @ATL Chiefs now starting Tyler Thigpen at QB … yes, really
9. Heath Miller, PIT @PHI Tough secondary plays into possession TE’s favor
10. Dante Rosario, CAR @MIN Looks to repeat Week 1 performance after quiet Week 2
11. Anthony Fasano, MIA NE Be wary - splitting time and touches with David Martin
12. L.J. Smith, PHI PIT Good, athletic red zone target that PHI sorely missed
13. Vernon Davis, SF DET Lions D good way to rebound from no catches in Week 2
14. Robert Royal, BUF OAK QB Edwards’ ascent benefits Royal in red zone
15. Bo Scaife, TEN HOU Had just 1 catch in 1st week with Collins at QB
