The Week 6 DVR Report

Posted by Scott Uhing

TV junkies had probably already circled this Sunday night’s game months in advance. The long awaited rematch of New England and San Diego, last year’s AFC Championship Game, although with a different feel, still has the potential to go down to the wire.

Also, former division rivals square off when the Cowboys visit Arizona and the Ravens flock to Indianapolis, and current division rivals duke it out inside a Minnesota dome and in front of a pirate ship in Florida.

With 14 games on the weekend docket, prepare to press record and get ready for……..

The Top 10 Must-See Games of Week 6

(All times E.S.T.)

Might Be Worth Your Time…..

10. Dallas at Arizona, 4:15 p.m., FOX

Although the lowest-rated game on our list, this game catches our attention. The Cowboys are back on track after a home win over the Bengals, in which QB Tony Romo, WR Terrell Owens, and rookie RB Felix Jones are turned in impressive days. The Cardinals were sensational at home last week as well, knocking off an unbeaten Buffalo team even without WR Anquan Boldin. Dallas should run right over a soft Arizona defense, but watch for QB Kurt Warner and WR Larry Fitzgerald to keep this matchup of former division rivals close.

9. Philadelphia at San Francisco, 4:15 p.m., FOX

Both teams come in at 2-3 and are losers of two straight. Even with a banged-up roster and a trip to the west coast, the Eagles should still feel like the heavy favorites. Philadelphia’s offense started dominant in the first quarter last week, only to flounder for the rest of the game against a good Redskins defense. QB Donovan McNabb and RB Brian Westbrook shouldn’t have the same problem this week in San Francisco. The 49ers are almost guaranteed to give up big plays downfield. If RB Frank Gore can’t keep the Niners offense on the field, the Eagles roll in a “laugher”.

8. Chicago at Atlanta, 1:00 p.m., FOX

Surprise, surprise. The Bears are in first place in their division while the Falcons are over .500 in a recently competitive NFC South. Chicago crushed Detroit as expected last week, while rookie QB Matt Ryan shocked everyone with a gutsy victory in his first game at Lambeau Field. Although Ryan appears to be an early candidate for Rookie of the Year, don’t expect the Bears’ nasty defense to either share that opinion or allow Ryan to stay off his back for most of this game.

7. Green Bay at Seattle, 4:15 p.m., FOX

After a magnificent two-game start, Green Bay suddenly finds itself at 2-3. The answer to their running game last season, Ryan Grant, has been little more than a practice-squad back so far. Likewise, QB Aaron Rodgers has been stripped of his “savior” status as Green Bay’s quarterback. In Seattle, Mike Holmgren’s final season as head coach is quickly looking like a horror film for Seahawks fans. RB Julius Jones may still be ranked 11th in the league in rushing, yet QB Matt Hasselbeck has been anything but good this season.

Be Near a TV…..

6. Miami at Houston, 1:00 p.m., CBS

Who would have had the Dolphins, a 1-15 joke only a season ago, as winners over both teams in last year’s AFC Championship Game in back-to-back weeks? Not only did they pummel New England up in Foxboro, but the Ronnie Brown-led wishbone spread offense also helped Miami hold off San Diego last week. The Texans are still looking for their first win of the year, something they won’t find if QB Matt Schaub is on the bench again. Houston needs to rely on RB Steve Slaton and WR Andre Johnson to have any answers for a hot Miami team.

5. Cincinnati at NY Jets, 1:00 p.m., CBS

The Cincinnati “Bungles” are winless after five games. Jets QB Brett Favre only threw six touchdown passes against Arizona in his last game. Formula for a blow-out? Maybe not. The Bengals played surprisingly well on the road against both the Giants and Cowboys; good news this week considering the Jets certainly are not an NFC East-caliber team. You can bet QB Carson Palmer and WR Chad Ocho Cinco are still hungry for the team’s first win, which should keep Cincinnati competitive with the Jets at least into the fourth quarter.

4. Baltimore at Indianapolis, 1:00 p.m., CBS

The Ravens are 2-2 but probably could be undefeated minus losses in both overtime and in the final minutes of the fourth. QB Joe Flacco has Baltimore just behind Pittsburgh in the AFC North even without running back Willis McGahee in top form. While the Colts are also 2-2, oppositely they are just a few plays away from being 0-4. Peyton Manning and the 16th-ranked offense have struggled enormously in games that would have been locks for the team in seasons past. Colts fans should be wary: Indianapolis still has not won a single game in newly-opened Lucas Oil Stadium.

Getcha’ popcorn ready …

3. New England at San Diego, 8:15 p.m., NBC, (SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL)

Patriots. Chargers. Two teams that have no love lost between them. New England knocked out San Diego in the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and surely the Chargers will be looking for primetime revenge on national television. The Pats stayed on the west coast all week after last week’s win in San Francisco, so we’re unsure which team will show up: the 3-1 version that has seemingly overachieved without Brady, or the lackluster squad that was slaughtered by Miami.

San Diego has its own problems. After picking apart Oakland and the Jets, the Chargers fell back to earth with a loss to those same Dolphins. We’re pretty sure Miami won’t be part of the equation for Sunday Night Football, so expect these teams to give us a good one in California.

2. Carolina at Tampa Bay, 1:00 p.m., FOX

Has anyone noticed that nearly every team in the NFC South is over .500? With the exception of the 2-3 Saints, the division boasts quality teams in Carolina and Tampa Bay. The Panthers are the quietest 4-1 team we’ve ever heard of, while the Buccaneers are over .500 playing a backup quarterback. Carolina has outscored its last two opponents 58-9 thanks to the RB tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as well as the team’s outstanding defensive play.

Tampa Bay may have lost a tough road game to Denver last week, but the Bucs are still unbeaten and relatively untested at home. This contest will clearly be a statement game for both teams, and should decide which team is the cream of the crop in a truly challenging division.

1. Jacksonville at Denver, 4:05 p.m., CBS

Two of the most exciting teams in the league meet this Sunday at Mile High in Denver. The Jaguars’ only two wins came on plays late in the fourth quarter, and they have lost a few contests in the same manner. QB David Garrard had struggled through his first few games, but appears to resemble last year’s team leader more and more each week.

The Broncos have the second-best offense in the NFL, featuring the weapons of QB Jay Cutler and wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. Despite their explosive ability to score points, Denver can’t stop anyone on defense. This could be good news for Jacksonville running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew as they look to shred yet another suspect run defense. All in all, this game should be a thrill ride from start to finish.
