Week 5 NFL Team Power Rankings

Posted by Brian Lauer

Another week in the NFL has meant another week of NFC dominance. The NFC East, which sent three teams to the playoffs last year, is dominating through the first four weeks. All four teams are in the top 10 of Imaginary Gridiron’s power rankings, and the Eagles are sure to rise once Brian Westbrook (ankle) is healthy.

The undefeated Bills and Titans are the class of the AFC thus far, while the Colts and Patriots look to re-gain their historical dominance coming off bye weeks. Both teams need to get healthy and address shortcomings in a hurry in order to contend for playoff berths.

For the lower half of the league, the Chiefs move up a few spots because of a stellar performance by Larry Johnson in a surprising win over previously unbeaten Denver. The Texans are still winless, but remain in front of the clearly inferior Raiders and Chiefs.

Once more divisional play begins, especially between teams from the NFC East, we will be due for a rankings shakeup. But for now, the Giants remain on top, at least until battles with the Cowboys, Redskins and Eagles threaten their pole position.

1. New York Giants: Receivers, TE Kevin Boss have to step up with Plaxico out
2. Tennessee Titans: Kerry Collins is holding the ship steady with Vince Young still out
3. Buffalo Bills: Surprise of the year; need to slow down Cardinals offense this week
4. Dallas Cowboys: Easy matchup vs. Cincinnati should get offense back on track
5. Washington Redskins: Huge win vs. Dallas; QB Campbell improving every week
6. Pittsburgh Steelers: Offense looked less than spectacular vs. Ravens last week
7. Carolina Panthers: Jonathan Stewart has been excellent so far, scoring 4 TDs
8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Griese has Bucs rolling; is 3-0 as a starter, despite INTs
9. Philadelphia Eagles: Have a chance to move up with big win vs. Washington this week
10. Denver Broncos: Atypical Shanahan team; 2nd in NFL with 314 passing ypg
11. San Diego Chargers: Top scoring team in NFL behind young gun QB Rivers
12. Jacksonville Jaguars: RB tandem of Jones-Drew and Taylor keeping team afloat
13. Baltimore Ravens: Tough loss against the Steelers, but QB Flacco is getting better
14. New England Patriots: Looking to regroup after bye week and loss to the Dolphins
15. Green Bay Packers: Rodgers’ status is “uncertain” for winnable game vs. Atlanta
16. New Orleans Saints: Reggie Bush needs to shine with Shockey and Colston still out
17. Chicago Bears: Matt Forte is leading R.O.Y. candidate with 392 rushing yards so far
18. Indianapolis Colts: Dead last in rush defense; RB Addai needs to get on track
19. New York Jets: Big day for Favre sends Gang Green into bye week riding high
20. Arizona Cardinals: No Boldin means slack must be picked up by Breaston
21. San Francisco 49ers: Solid so far; can make noise with win over Pats this week
22. Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson leads the way into MNF clash with Saints
23. Seattle Seahawks: WRs Engram, Branch on the mend; and not a moment too soon
24. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan has played well; presence of Michael Turner a clear help
25. Miami Dolphins: Ronnie Brown must team on his back a la 5-TD effort in Week 3
26. Cleveland Browns: Best team in state of Ohio, which doesn’t say much
27. Houston Texans: Will spend October at home, but it starts with division rival Colts
28. Kansas City Chiefs: LJ has carried team with back-to-back big rushing days
29. Oakland Raiders: Head into the bye week with a new head coach leading the way
30. Cincinnati Bengals: Likely to remain winless with Palmer banged up vs. Cowboys
31. Detroit Lions: Time of change; RB Kevin Smith giving way to veteran Rudi Johnson
32. St. Louis Rams: Head into bye week needing a lot of help; only scoring 10.8 ppg
