Something happened as we crossed the halfway point of the 2008 season. After weeks of scavenging for boring, low-impact bye-week and injury replacements, opportunities were served up on golden platters for Week 10. Brady Quinn, Ryan Torain and Jamaal Charles are just a few of the high-ceiling players getting their first chances to start, giving fantasy owners more meaningful transactions to ponder on a shortened week.
Quinn may be the next big thing in Cleveland. He may fall flat on his face and lose the job to Derek Anderson once again. The unknown is exciting and sure to draw attention from owners in most leagues, likely making him the object of most of their affection. He has a strong matchup against Denver on Thursday, but only three days to prepare for his first career start.
Sage Rosenfels, Shaun Hill and Tyler Thigpen also have new-found opportunities and are poised to make the most of them. Thigpen has been a pleasant surprise, both in real-life and fantasy, and still has room to grow. Rosenfels leads an offense that is very pass-friendly, so is a usable option during starter Matt Schaub’s expected four-week absence with a torn MCL. Rex Grossman, not on the list below, also has several weeks to reassert himself as a capable NFL starter.
Torain was getting a lot of buzz in the preseason, but then suffered an elbow injury and fell off the radar. Here we are in Week 10, and Torain is back and the last man standing in a previously crowded Broncos backfield. Michael Pittman and Andre Hall were placed on the injured reserve this week, and Selvin Young remains questionable with a groin injury. Torain may need some time to shake the rust off, but is still a must-add in all leagues.
Charles comes off his first career 100-yard performance and averages a robust 5.7 yards per carry. The kid can fly, now gets a start to showcase his abilities. Larry Johnson is suspended for this weekend’s matchup against San Diego, and Kolby Smith is done for the season with a knee injury. With LJ’s status up in the air for the team’s remaining seven games, Charles still has a better-than-average chance to gain “feature back” status.
Wide receivers are significantly less straightforward this week. Greg Camarillo is the head of this week’s class because of his outstanding relationship with quarterback Chad Pennington. Beyond him and New York’s Steve Smith, upside is hard to find and comes at the sacrifice of reliability.
Atlanta’s Michael Jenkins still has a chance to make good on his first-round draft status and comes handcuffed to up-and-coming rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. Minnesota’s Sidney Rice is a prototypical red zone target, but may not stay healthy or get enough looks from quarterback Gus Frerotte to make a difference. Both have talent that demands a look, though, especially in deeper leagues.
Below are complete profiles of our top five quarterback, running back and wide receiver free agents this week.
In order to make the list, a player must enter this week available in at least 50 percent of ESPN.com leagues. Some notable players worth immediate consideration, but just missed our availability cut line: Dolphins QB Chad Pennington, Patriots QB Matt Cassel, Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia, Cardinals RB Tim Hightower, Giants RB Derrick Ward, Raiders RB Justin Fargas, Rams WR Donnie Avery, Dolphins WR Ted Ginn Jr., Ravens WR Derrick Mason and Eagles WR Kevin Curtis.
QUARTERBACKS
Brady Quinn, Cleveland Browns
Status: Finally getting shot to lead Browns
Key Stats: Has 8 career pass attempts, all of which were in ‘07
What to Watch For: If he can hit the ground running
Other Notes: Curious timing by the Browns, but an opportunity in fantasy … has two pass catchers in WR Edwards and TE Winslow who can make him look good, even on the worst of throws … upside is high, but is still an unknown commodity
Bottom Line: A must-add in all leagues, given his immense upside
Sage Rosenfels, Houston Texans
Status: Engineering pass-happy Texans for next 4 weeks
Key Stats: Threw for 224 yards, 2 TDs in relief of Schaub
What to Watch For: How Schaub’s torn MCL heals
Other Notes: Was a goat in previous fill-in duties for Schaub, but still showed promise in fantasy … Texans still likely to air it out, regardless of who their QB is … pass-oriented offense gives Rosenfels, a very capable QB, added value
Bottom Line: Worth immediate add, even with tough run of defenses ahead
Shaun Hill, San Francisco 49ers
Status: Taking over for demoted J.T. O’Sullivan
Key Stats: Threw for 173 yards, TD in 2nd half vs. Seattle
What to Watch For: How he fits into Mike Martz scheme
Other Notes: Martz system can bring value to any quarterback, heralded or unheralded … played well in one half of action, though in a 34-13 loss to hapless Seattle … 49ers had a bye in Week 9, giving him two weeks of reps as a first-teamer
Bottom Line: Need more proof he can make an impact in standard leagues
Tyler Thigpen, Kansas City Chiefs
Status: Overachieving in unexpected stint as Chiefs starter
Key Stats: Has 3 passing TDs, receiving TD, rushing TD in last 3 weeks
What to Watch For: Continued development; could be KC’s QB of the future
Other Notes: Has been a surprise, even to the Chiefs, who have shuffled quarterbacks virtually all season … being used creatively and showing signs of development as a passer … expect him to start for the rest of ‘08
Bottom Line: Intriguing choice, especially as a spot starter this week vs. San Diego
Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Status: Finally turning talent into fantasy results
Key Stats: Has 3 200+ yard games in his last 4
What to Watch For: How he fares vs. tough upcoming schedule
Other Notes: Faces every NFC East team by season’s end … poise was helping Ravens win early, but didn’t translate into fantasy production until Week 7 … has 4 TD passes, a rushing TD, and no interceptions in the last 3 weeks
Bottom Line: Bye-week or injury replacement with good matchup at Houston
RUNNING BACKS
Cedric Benson, Cincinnati Bengals
Status: Starting in Cincinnati
Key Stats: 104 yards, TD in win over Jacksonville
What to Watch For: How he, Bengals finish season
Other Notes: Took over for starter Chris Perry, who struggled with consistency and turnovers … was the central factor in Cincy getting its first win in Week 9 … has a bye this week, then faces three straight teams ranked in the NFL’s top eight in rush defense
Bottom Line: Worthwhile addition, but upside is limited by tough matchups
Ryan Torain, Denver Broncos
Status: Being thrown into the fire
Key Stats: 3 carries for 1 yard in NFL debut last week
What to Watch For: Health of Selvin Young, number of touches
Other Notes: Was in the mix to start before dislocating his elbow in training camp … is being thrust into the spotlight after Michael Pittman and Andre Hall were placed on the IR this week … only competition left for touches is Young, who is questionable this week
Bottom Line: Race to the waiver wire; is talented and has little competition for carries
Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens
Status: Taking starting job from Willis McGahee?
Key Stats: Rushed for career-high 154 yards at Cleveland
What to Watch For: How changing Baltimore offense affects his workload
Other Notes: Baltimore has opened the playbook for Rice, who could start in McGahee’s place this week … has been active in the passing game as well, averaging 43 receiving ypg in his last four
Bottom Line: Race to the waiver wire; he won’t be there long
Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs
Status: Set to start in Week 10
Key Stats: Rushed for 105 yards vs. Bucs in Week 9
What to Watch For: LJ’s status with the team and NFL office
Other Notes: With Larry Johnson suspended for Week 10, maybe beyond, and Kolby Smith missing the rest of the year with a knee injury, has big value moving forward … known for his speed and can also catch passes out of the backfield … is averaging 5.7 yards per carry
Bottom Line: Race to the waiver wire; he won’t be there long
BenJarvus Green-Ellis, New England Patriots
Status: Getting touches with Sammy Morris, LaMont Jordan injured
Key Stats: Scored TDs in 3 straight weeks
What to Watch For: Morris’ knee; how Green-Ellis fits into new Pats RB mix
Other Notes: Was signed from New England’s practice squad prior to Week 7 … filled in nicely for Morris, who left the Patriots’ Week 7 win in the second quarter with a knee injury … splitting carries with Kevin Faulk down the middle, at least until Morris returns
Bottom Line: Worth immediate add; presents more upside than Faulk
WIDE RECEIVERS
Greg Camarillo, Miami Dolphins
Status: Turning heads in fantasy
Key Stats: 11 catches in Week 9, 43 catches on season
What to Watch For: His place in the red zone pecking order
Other Notes: An intriguing option … is a crafty receiver who does a nice job finding holes in coverage … has been consistent with at least 4 catches in each of his last 7 games
Bottom Line: Worth an add in all 10 and 12 team leagues
Matt Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars
Status: Temporarily avoiding suspension
Key Stats: T10th in NFL with 44 catches
What to Watch For: Verdict from NFL office on appeal of suspension
Other Notes: Big, athletic receiver is finally making good on first round draft choice Jags used on him … has been consistent with 5+ catches in 7 of his 8 games … likely to be suspended 3 games in the near future
Bottom Line: Add with caution, given probability of a suspension
Steve Smith, New York Giants
Status: Moving the chains for New York
Key Stats: Scored 1st TD of season in Week 9
What to Watch For: More scoring looks
Other Notes: Has emerged as a go-to receiver for Eli Manning in crunch situations … is a quality possession man, but is undersized for red zone looks … makes most contributions in PPR leagues
Bottom Line: Good bench option, but not explosive enough to crack starting lineups
Michael Jenkins, Atlanta Falcons
Status: Coming off 2-TD effort in Week 9
Key Stats: Averaging 17.9 yards per catch
What to Watch For: Any semblance of consistency
Other Notes: Can be a worthwhile playmaker, given the attention No. 1 wideout Roddy White draws on the opposite side … has had his moments in a largely disappointing pro career … had career-highs of 53 catches and 532 yards last year and had 7 TD catches in 2006
Bottom Line: Keep expectations low, but monitor his weekly production
Sidney Rice, Minnesota Vikings
Status: Returning to full strength (knee)
Key Stats: Had 8-yard TD catch in Week 9
What to Watch For: Health, number of looks from QB Frerotte
Other Notes: Physically gifted, but young and injury prone … will draw red zone targets from Frerotte, but Bernard Berrian has developed as team’s best deep threat … value will depend on ability to score, which makes for inconsistent fantasy performances
Bottom Line: Add in 12-team leagues; wait and see in more shallow leagues
