Big Bertha’s Week 13 Hardware

Posted by Mike Bertha

This year fantasy owners should be thankful for the multiple servings of monster fantasy performances that proved a great compliment to the turkey and mashed potatoes on Thursday. Chris Johnson, LenDale White, Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Donovan McNabb, and Brian Westbrook all handed in ridiculous stat lines on their holiday at the office.

A Baltimore blowout, a Green Bay-Carolina game that went down to the wire, and three one-sided weekday affairs made Week 13 an interesting chapter in the NFL’s saga of 2008. Read more »

Future May Be Daunte-ing for Lions

Posted by Mike Bertha

It was nearly a decade ago when avid NFL followers bared witness to one of the most high-powered and unstoppable duos the league has ever seen. Randy Moss, a young kid out of Marshall with the 6-foot-4 inch stature and blazing 40 speed, and Daunte Culpepper, a towering quarterback with a good track record of team loyalty, self-discipline, and a cannon for an arm. The Vikings organization put the two in the same offense to start the 2000 season and awed the football world.

For the next five seasons, Culpepper and Moss were perennial picks in the first round of nearly every fantasy league. Culpepper threw for 129 touchdowns by the end of the 2004 season, and Moss was on the receiving end of 72 scores of his own. Read more »

The Unwanted Return of Sexy Rexy

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

“Yikes” is the only thought that came to mind upon seeing Rex Grossman back under center for a professional football game. For fantasy owners with stake in Kyle Orton’s success, the reaction was probably riddled with more expletives after seeing him exit with a high ankle sprain.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Orton could miss up to a month with that ankle sprain, an injury that initially looked much worse. Grossman will likely lead the NFC North-leading Bears against Tennessee next weekend, which is a tough pill to swallow for both Bears fans and fantasy owners alike. Read more »

A putrid 4-10 Week 7 takes us under .500 for the first time this season. Think of it like the stock market.  After a huge downslide you have two choices. Cash in and take the loss, or hang on for the ride. I suggest everyone stays along for the ride. At the very least, you will see a grown man driven to the edge by point spreads. That’s entertaining no matter who you are. Read more »

Week 7 Matchups: The Good, Bad and Ugly

Posted by Anthony Oliva III

It’s official, nothing makes sense in the NFL anymore. The previously undefeated Giants fell to the hapless Browns, the winless Rams topped the surging Redskins, and the only thing you can expect is the unexpected. The same can be held true for individual matchups, but here we try to make some sense of what should happen.

Here is a look at some of the most intriguing Week 7 matchups. It’s all about starting quality players when they have a favorable matchup, and the most savvy owners know when it’s time to take a chance on lesser players facing softer defenses. Take the first step here – in the sixth edition of The Good, Bad and Ugly. Read more »

The answer? Two. One to screw in the light bulb and another to draft an overrated skill position player in the first round of another NFL draft. Lions fans had clearly grown unfathomably sick of being the brunt of all NFL jokes. With lines like, “…and that’s why you’re the Lions” it must have been hard to make it through the past seven years in Detroit.

Matt Millen, a former all-American defensive tackle at Penn State who had moderate success in the NFL before becoming the color guy for MNF radio broadcasts, was hired to be the president of the Detroit Lions in 2001. The events that ensued are so intensely awful that a disclaimer should be required before any form of media lists them consecutively for fear that it could cause a spike in the number of brain aneurysms in the state of Michigan. Gridiron Game Notes: Suspensions, News, Themes

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

Plaxico Burress is a bad dude, in more ways than one. We’ve known for a while, dating back to his days with the Steelers and at Michigan State, that Burress has his share of shortcomings as a human being. Unfortunately for the rest of the National Football League, we’ve also known just how big a force he is on the football field.

Lots of dirt is being dug up on Burress after the Giants announced a two-week suspension for him Wednesday. The first week is a bye for the Giants, but the second is a road contest Burress will miss at Seattle. All told, the suspension will cost Burress $230,000 in salary, the New York Post reported.

The suspension came down after Burress failed to report for Monday and Tuesday team meetings and workouts, according to the Post. Read more »

Turner Sets Falcons Rushing Record in Debut

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

As highly touted as Michael Turner was as LaDainian Tomlinson’s backup in San Diego, nobody was quite sure what to make of him in a starting role with the Falcons. Well, his Week 1 performance was surely a positive sign as he broke Atlanta’s single-game franchise rushing record with 22 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

Explosion has been a strong suit for Turner, who averaged 5.5 yards per carry in four seasons with the Chargers. He torched the Detroit Lions defense for a 66-yard touchdown on his fifth carry of the game, then later scored from 10 yards out as Atlanta ran up a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Read more »
