The Unwanted Return of Sexy Rexy

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

“Yikes” is the only thought that came to mind upon seeing Rex Grossman back under center for a professional football game. For fantasy owners with stake in Kyle Orton’s success, the reaction was probably riddled with more expletives after seeing him exit with a high ankle sprain.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Orton could miss up to a month with that ankle sprain, an injury that initially looked much worse. Grossman will likely lead the NFC North-leading Bears against Tennessee next weekend, which is a tough pill to swallow for both Bears fans and fantasy owners alike. Read more »

The Fantasy NFL 101: Week 6 Player Rankings

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

Some new faces crack our top 101 rankings, but the list has the same distinct look to it with a virtually unaltered top 10. That could change next week, though, because Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is officially on probation as our top-ranked player. The only question standing in the way of a Week 6 demotion is, who else deserves the top spot?

LaDainian Tomlinson has issues of his own and comes off a lackluster Week 5 effort. Frank Gore is having a fine, fine season, but his game just doesn’t scream “best player in fantasy football.” Clinton Portis is ever-so-slowly inching his way there, but doesn’t have half the big-game explosion of Peterson. We knew going in that Peterson would be inconsistent, so he gets at least one more week to prove just how good he can be. Read more »

Week 6 Free Agent Profiles: QB, RB, WR

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

Current and former Bears are among the most desirable players on waiver wires this week, with quarterback Kyle Orton generating major buzz with a second straight career day. One of the beneficiaries of Orton’s stellar play has been punt-returner-turned-receiver Devin Hester, who has found paydirt in each of the last two weeks. Meanwhile, former teammate Cedric Benson finds himself in a good situation in the Cincinnati Bengals backfield.

Orton is surprisingly the most explosive quarterback available in most fantasy leagues. Few would have predicted that he would throw seven touchdown passes over any three-game stretch during the season, but he has over Chicago’s last three.

Reclamation project Marc Bulger is also a good pickup after being announced as the Rams starter for the rest of ‘08. JaMarcus Russell has quietly been better than expected, making the former No. 1 pick an intriguing pick as a bye-week fill-in. Read more »

Big Bertha’s Week 5 Hardware

Posted by Mike Bertha

The fifth week went in the books with a Ryan Longwell game-winning field goal Monday night and more hardware seems necessary to cap off another exciting week of NFL action. With blowouts in Carolina, New York and Arizona and a classic comeback served up by Peyton Manning, there were plenty of commendable efforts put forth on the gridiron Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers took a big step after filling Favre’s spikes by finding himself on a Dream Lineup that was led by his predecessor in Week 4. And two Eagles find themselves on our Nightmare Squad after a lackluster showing at home against the ‘Skins. And after Week 4’s Waiver Wire Special Steve Slaton went for nearly 100 yards rushing and two scores, be sure to check out who took home the honors this time around as Big Bertha’s back to dish out some Week 5 hardware. Gridiron Game Notes: Going Local

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

We cannot understate the impact of getting team-specific news from local newspapers. While reading blogs like this one certainly can paint a big picture of what’s happening around the National Football League, questions about players and teams can best be answered by local beat writers. These are true journalists who cover a team all week, have locker room access and get a much better feel for all of the developing storylines - big and small.

There are two difficult things for a fantasy owner in their plight to find this kind of information. First, locating hometown news sites online can be time-consuming and difficult. Second, once you find the news you need, what do you do with it? How do you put it into the perspective of YOUR fantasy team? Read more »

Week 5 Free Agent Profiles: QB, RB, WR

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

The ebb and flow of the waiver wire always leaves viable options for managers in need of bye week help, but this is a week where no players will act as saviors for your floundering playoff hopes. Three distinct concepts can summarize the quarterback, running back and wide receiver positions, as owners must ponder the good and bad in potential bye-week fill-ins.

For the quarterbacks, “young vs. old” can sum up your available options. Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell and Joe Flacco all present some sort of upside, but their merits must be weighed against veterans lower-ceiling, more reliable veterans Brian Griese, Kerry Collins and Gus Frerotte. Chicago’s Kyle Orton falls right in the middle of the age spectrum and may just be the best, most trustworthy signal caller available after throwing three touchdown passes in Week 4. Read more »
